By Your Side – Kasie West

BY YOUR SIDE.jpgIn this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

I loved this story so much! After reading so much fantasy a nice fluffy contemporary is what I needed. It is also what I got! On enjoyment scale this was amazing I love it, but sadly I am learning not to just take that into consideration and starting to work on my reviews more equally and this book had some problems! But I bloody loved it and it would be even better if these things would be fixed.

So one of the main problems I found in this book was with the main character Autumn having anxiety, it didn’t feel like that mental health problem was represented correctly, it felt like it was just a plot point rather than making it a prominent thing in the novel. Also, the fact that none of her friends could tell she had anxiety and yet, Dax, someone who she met in the library, could tell immediately that she had. I just don’t buy how they couldn’t have known about your friend having anxiety, even if they don’t tell you, there was loads of hints that she did have some kind of problem, it’s mentioned more than once how at times Autumn runs off in some social situations. Like I find it really hard to believe her friends wouldn’t know this. Even after her bag being found in Jeff’s car with her medication and they still didn’t know?! Like crappy friends. Real crappy friends. I also didn’t like the point where Dallin blamed Autumn for Jeff’s accident, it wasn’t her fault and I really didn’t like how at no point that was not addressed in this book, because nobody should be told it was their fault when it is an accident she could not control. So I really didn’t like that it didn’t address that.

Dax and Autumn really do not have much background to them they felt very 2D not having much personality or background. They try to bring in some of Dax’s past by introducing the conflict of his mother but that felt like a catalyst so Autumn and Dax could have an argument. It didn’t feel like they were going to go much further into his past and they didn’t. The same fo Autumn we don’t really know much about her which is very problematic because I like to know my characters and neither of them felt like they had a personality.

Though despite these problems I did actually in love with this book, the dream of being trapped in a library, hell yes?! So although it had problems it was what I needed after finishing so much Sarah J Maas and I really did love this book. It was simple and cute.

I rated this ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 on Goodreads! (With my new rating system)

Writing update 2: The Selective Mute Princess

So if you didn’t watch my bimonthly goals for May + June you should do that by clicking here. In my new goals, I mentioned how I wanted to spend the next two months writing at least 10 chapters of The Selective Mute Princess. In my last writing update, I mentioned how I had scrapped all of draft 1 and 2 which all together was probably around 200,100 words if you combine both of those drafts. I thought I would come to regret it, I wrote that update last July, now it’s May 2017 and I do not regret it!

I have currently written chapter one and two and I am currently writing chapter three, I thought that rewriting the 3rd draft wouldn’t change anything for me to do with this story. In the sense of the only thing, it would fix would be the word count and it not being so high. I wasn’t sure how it could fix my character or plot problem. It has, well right now it has. For example, I’ve fixed the insta-love problem in my story and it isn’t insta-love anymore, you can see the relationship grow. I was surprised how well this would go. This was the first story I ever wrote so it’s like 14/15 year old me with all these ideas, and I am about to turn 21 so it’s a big difference in terms of my brain and the fact I have grown.

So, writing chapter one and two so far it has been difficult I’m not going to lie and say it’s been easy writing this because it hasn’t. For the first week of May I was staring at a blank word document, I just I was so stuck on how draft 1 and 2 started that I couldn’t think of a new way to start draft 3 but I did start it a different way and this version is so much better. Like how it starts this time I love because so much later it’s going to show how Amelia has progressed and that her character has grown.

So with Ethan and Amelia’s relationship as said before it isn’t insta-love anymore, Ethan has been working at the palace for 3 months now and they have got themselves into a routine. At night when she wakes from nightmares Ethan comes in and gives her a glass of water and if she throws up he is there taking care of her. Nobody but them knows that this happens every night, so that is where the basis of their relationship grows. I am really happy with how it is developing right now.

Amelia’s relationships with her parents are of course very strained, she doesn’t like to even react to them she stays silent with her head down. This will soon start changing as the story goes on, Ethan is going to have a big impact on Amelia and it’s going to show her what she is missing out on and maybe even help her try and come to terms with the trauma she has been through. It’s not going to be one of those stories where she is cured by the guy because that’s not it, Ethan helps show her but a number of things actually bring her out of her self-imposed silence and not leaving the house. One of the new things I’ve added is that every week Amelia is forced to see a counsellor, eventually, I am going to make Amelia start opening up to her, so it’s a number of things that change Amelia’s mind. In the original version, it was practically just Ethan who got Amelia out of the house and her shell and I didn’t want that to be the case. So I did change that.

My original version is still on wattpad and I have been tempted so many times to take it down, but my thinking is that it’s so different from what The Selective Mute Princess is now it doesn’t matter if people read that version. Whilst I am doing this, more readers the better so when I do eventually publish it’s a bigger audience. So it is still up on wattpad and even though it has problems, people still enjoy it and I am really lucky with that.

Screen Shot 2017-05-10 at 16.46.09So that is my word count so far, which I think for 2 full chapters and the start of a 3rd one isn’t bad! For overall word count I’m aiming for like 60-80k if I go over a bit it’s fine but I don’t want to go really high because I do know that one problem with the other drafts is because I was updating on wattpad, I don’t have that problem right now because it’s not going to post it on wattpad. So that helps.

If you guys would like to see the first chapter, let me know and I shall maybe post some of it in the next writing update. There won’t be 10 month gap between this and the next one though!

I would like to thank OfTomes for sending me an E-ARC it is very much appreciated. So this is a book that came from wattpad and I am very familiar with wattpad, I am on it myself and I do say I’m glad I didn’t read it when it was on wattpad (I usually end up hating the published versions.)

One of the many things I loved about this book was that when Halen is entered into this world she actually freaks out like it’s a major freak out not one of those little pathetic ones where you get over it in a few chapters. This was a big positive for me in this book and that we could see a lasting effect on not being told about this other world. We see Halen begin to question who she can and can’t trust and in some books, we don’t see it, so I am really glad that we did see the ripple of this effect in the book!

The secondary characters were some of my favourites and the fact that at times they were used for comic relief was even better, I fell in love with all of these characters. Especially Halan and Tage. I really liked the relationship that developed between Halan and Tage and the fact that they were willing to do what it took especially Tage and although at the beginning they didn’t really like each other, it was nice to it grow into a bond where they actually both relied on each other a lot.

I loved the guardian aspect of this book it wasn’t something that I was expecting, and usually, we see guardian’s in things like witches or fae or wolves and vampires it was very nice to see it placed somewhere different. I also loved what the guardian’s actually meant for the people who had them. The concept or mermaids being evil is something I love and isn’t explored that often this novel also included sirens into it, and I loved the fact that instead of sirens being totally evil they weren’t (at least not all of them).

Halan’s love interest is, of course, Dax and he was a very interesting character after Halan discovers that she had a twin sister Natalie who was killed. Dax was very close with Natalie and we see how much her darkness affects Dax and how he projects that worry onto Natalie not wanting her to follow the same route as her twin. Dax is very strong and his relationship with Natalie was completely different than with Halan and he was working hard on making sure that she didn’t follow the same route. Natalie felt like the catalyst for everything that happened in Halan’s life when the novel started. =

This story is brilliant and gripping I couldn’t put the book down I read it in one sitting and I was addicted I just kept turning and turning the page and before I knew it, the story was over and that made me incredibly sad. I need more. I need the next book! Because of that ending, wow! This book just gave me the feels and I really want the next one! I would go into more detail but I don’t want this to be spoiler-y but I loved some of the moments in this book. I rated this 5/5 stars on Goodreads!

May TBR

I didn’t want to do a strict TBR just because this month is my birthday and I have a lot to do this month plus it’s my 21st birthday on the 17th May. So I didn’t want to put a lot of stress on me to try and read everything on my TBR so I do have a few books on here, but if I don’t read them then it’s fine!

  • The Witches of the Dark Power – Gabriella Lepore
  • Coral and Bone – Tiffany Duane
  • Empire of Storms – Sarah J Maas
  • A Court of Mist and Fury – Sarah J Maas
  • A Court of Wings and Ruin – Sarah J Maas

I do also have Lord of Shadows on preorder but I don’t know whether that will get here in time for me to read in May or before I go away at the beginning of June. So if it gets here I’ll be reading, if not then that’s definitely on the TBR for next month.
